Spring’s Courage

Happy Full Moon, happy Spring!   What a windy time.  I find myself treating the Spring/Wood element’s Liver and Gall Bladder meridians frequently when the winds pick up their strength as they prepare the earth for the incoming heat of summer.

I often write about the Liver channel in spring, so I’d like to devote some time to talk it’s paired Gallbladder channel.  This great meridian flows on the lateral sides of the body from the eyes to the fourth toes, and is considered the “pivot” meridian. When the body experiences illness, and pathogens linger, “half exterior,” “half interior,” this is one of the primary channels we treat.

As righteous anger is the corresponding emotion of the Wood element, the Gall Bladder official is connected specifically with the aspects of courage and timidity.  We often hear the phrase “have the gall” with regard to boldness, and often in a somewhat pathological context, but the emotions are all considered valid and important in acupuncture theory.

To dare to assert oneself, to make decisions for oneself - as we see in the blossoms and plants that are eagerly emerging right now - is medicinal to our gallbladder qi.  When I think of the concept of self determination, this is the first channel that comes to my mind.  We live in a society that often encourages and forces us to suppress the voicing our needs.  But without anger and action, nothing would get done, nothing would grow, and nothing would change.

When it feels right, by daring to take action or take a stand - and compassionately express our anger or frustration - we can  pivot into a more clear direction, and see with our mind’s eye where we want to go.  This helps to prevent energy from stagnating in the body, and to attune to the season with greater ease.

I commend you for daring to be you.
